※During summer season and other times when traffic congestion is expected, we recommend exiting the Joshin-etsu Expressway at the Myogi-Matsuida IC and taking the the Former Usui Pass. (The Old Road rather than the Usui Bypass)

Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza is one of the most well-known sightseeing spots in the Karuizawa area. It is the main street leading from the Kyu-Karuizawa Rotary to the Former Usui Pass.

Former Usui Pass Observation Platform

A spot with a spectacular view located at an altitude of 1,200 meters on the border between the Nagano and Gunma Prefecture. It offers a panoramic view of the majestic Mt. Asama and Myogi Mountain Range, and on clear days, visitors can see as far as the Southern Alps and Southern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group. It is also a popular spot for enjoying autumn foliage, which is best viewed between mid-October and early November.

Megane Bridge, fusing art and technology

With a length of 91 meters and a height of 31 meters, this was one of the largest brick railroad bridges ever built in Japan. While the line has been closed and trains no longer pass over the bridge, it is still open for pedestrian passage, and locals affectionately refer to it as “Megane-bashi (Glasses Bridge).”
