Sustainability サステナビリティへの取り組み
Mampei Hotel began during the Edo period as Kameya Inn at Karuizawa-shuku, a post station at the time.
Staying at Mampei Hotel is made all the more pleasant by the natural environment cherished by the locals, as well as by their commitment to interpersonal communication.
We believe that these are the essences of why staying in Karuizawa is so enriching, and that Mampei Hotel is obligated to preserve these for future generations.
In order to fulfill our responsibility as a hotel intertwined with the history of Karuizawa as well as to continue welcoming guests in Karuizawa for the next 150 to 200 years, Mampei Hotel is committed to the following.
01
In order to protect Karuizawa’s rich natural environment
Efforts to beautify the surrounding area
The Old Karuizawa Ginza Street very near the hotel and other locations throughout Karuizawa make the area one of the most popular summer resorts in Japan, attracting numerous tourists each and every year. In order to protect the beautiful natural environment long cherished by local residents and preserve it for future generations, the hotel staff regularly picks up trash around the hotel and in the neighborhood.
Efforts to reduce food waste
Food waste does not burn well due to its high water content, so it requires a large amount of fuel to incinerate, generating a massive volume of carbon dioxide. Mampei Hotel makes use of a special machine that leverages the power of microorganisms to process food waste, which is primarily generated during the cooking process, in order to return it to nature as purified water. Reducing the amount of food waste helps reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during transportation to the waste-disposal facility and during incineration.
Efforts to make use of apple scraps
Mampei Hotel bread is available for purchase at the shop and served at breakfast in the Main Dining Room. For yeast, we make use of natural yeast derived from the pureed peels and cores of apples left over from the apple pie making process.
02
For the future of children
Providing a place to learn
In order to help local children––the future of Karuizawa––learn, we cooperate and communicate with local educational facilities and other institutions to provide learning opportunities that are only possible at a hotel, such as events where children can deepen their understanding while experiencing what it’s like to work at a hotel.
